TCS Social Curriculum Tools:
The Home to School Connection
These TCS classroom tools can be used by parents to improve family communication and cooperation.
Conflict resolution is a life skill children need not only at school but also at home. We can diffuse power struggles with our children through this simple yet universal technique.
WIN/WIN APPROACH:
“How can we make this
work for the both of us?”
I feel_______. I want______.
COMMUNICATION
Essential components of communication include tone, how the information is framed and ensuring that words are heard.
REDIRECTING OUR CHILDREN BY FRAMING OUR LANGUAGE IN A POSITIVE “CAN-DO” STYLE HELPS ELICIT A DESIRED RESPONSE:
• “Please use walking feet!” Instead of “Don’t run!”
• “Please tell me in your own voice what you want.” Instead of “I can’t hear you when you whine!”
• “It is almost dinner time but you can pick a cookie now and place it on a plate for later.” Instead
of “No, you can’t have a cookie now! We are going to eat dinner soon.”
TEACHABLE MOMENTS
Learning from our mistakes is an important skill to model. When a child makes a mistake or makes a poor choice, the act of reflection encourages responsibility and accountability.
WE CAN REFLECT WITH
OUR CHILDREN BY ASKING:
• “What can we/you do to fix this problem?”
• “Tell me, what is your plan?”
• “What might work better the next time?”
